The Morgan family from Crawley are climbing the equivalent height of the Matterhorn mountain at home throughout May by joining Christian relief and development charity Tearfund\u2019s The Climb<\/a> challenge. Funds raised through sponsorship for ascending their home\u2019s staircase will support Tearfund\u2019s work to support people living in poverty facing the threat of coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family were inspired to take on The Climb when their May holiday to Switzerland had to be put on ice due to travel restrictions. Amber, 11, has long been a supporter of Tearfund and because of her, the Morgans heard of the potential devastation of coronavirus in some of the poorest communities across the world and the work Tearfund is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tearfund are very concerned about these communities, where life is already difficult and there is little infrastructure to deal with coronavirus outbreaks. In places like Cox\u2019s Bazar in Bangladesh, the world\u2019s largest refugee camp, cramped conditions and limited handwashing facilities will prove deadly if the virus continues to spread. The charity are working with their local partners to make a meaningful, sustained response to the pandemic by carrying out targeted hygiene promotion and education, and improving sanitation for the most vulnerable people and their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dene, the mother of the family, explained, \u2018Amber has been the inspiration for the family and got us all behind Tearfund\u2019s cause after she heard what they are doing to make a sustainable difference. She has had a heart for helping others since she was young, and this challenge is a great way for us to use the loss of our holiday to make a positive contribution to those facing far worse circumstances than us.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I can\u2019t imagine how hard it is to be battling a life threatening virus in a temporary home with little access to sanitation. We want to do what we can to make a difference and taking on The Climb is our way of being able to help others who might be affected even more by the looming virus.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actor, Tearfund ambassador and star of \u2018Interstellar\u2019, \u2018Carnival Row\u2019 and BBC1\u2019s \u2018The A Word\u2019, David Gyasi knows how the Morgan family feels – he\u2019s swapped treading the boards for treading his staircase. \u2018I can’t quite believe I’m going to be climbing a mountain inside my house. Kilimanjaro in fact, which means 76 ascents of my stairs every day for a month. The training is going well, but as my kids have pointed out, it’s a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be! I’m doing this to raise money for Tearfund because I love what they do, how they go wherever the need is greatest in the world. I keep thinking about how the poorest and most vulnerable among us in the global community, are going to be hit the worst by COVID-19. I’d encourage those who are able to sign up and do this challenge.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Morgans are aiming to raise \u00a3500, which Tearfund will use through its partners to provide 160 families with sanitizing products for one month to help protect them against the virus. The family has so far been sponsored by family and friends and wants to encourage anyone interested in joining the challenge to sign up at www.tearfund.org\/theclimb<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
